A very aesthetically pleasing music data visualization project based on data provided by last.fm. Thanks to last.fm's massive library of user generated content, you can get pretty obscure with your searches and still end up with accurate information. Next step of course is integrating a musical interface to allow playback within the client. Heavy.

Dub Techno Netlabels

I can't get enough Dub Techno. Recently I came across some amazing net labels that make the majority of their albums free to download under a creative commons license. Most of the releases share similar qualities to the artists found on Echocord, and provide many hours of late listening pleasure and throbbing kick drums. Great to see such amazing collections of music forming in very different parts of the world.

I recently stumbled across Pantha Du Prince's 2009 'The Splendour' and fell in love with his mix of deep, minimal techno that spans the boundaries of Matthew Dear like Funk Pop and stark, mind numbing techno akin to Gaiser.

Think Radiohead doing drum n bass. Matt Elliott's early experimental dnb project is some of the fiercest and fastest music I have ever heard in this style. It still sounds as fresh as ever. I deeply respect Matt as a musician, and his choice to put this project on the back burner and pursue a career as a solo acoustic musician, who still channels the same melancholy, depressing and frustrated emotions but in a completely different musical style. In addition to his solo stuff, Matt still manages to remix many a big named musician under his 3EF moniker.

Channel the frustration Matt. We are listening.

Hints of their influences from hip hop, jazz, dubstep and experimental electronica can be heard in their productions."

Mount Kimbie is like a cleaner sounding version of Flying Lotus, from England, working more in the vein of dubstep rather than hip hop. Their first EP, Maybes, experiments with ambient soundscapes mixed with the heavy compression bass beat flylo style. This album is a bit dancier and cleaned up. I can't help but move my entire body when I listen to this.

This release is amazing. Axel Willner incorporates live drumming and vocals into his signature hypnotic loop lock style. The tracks are both refreshing and what you would expect of The Field. Sequenced is 15 minutes of synth looping bliss with crescendos of different live drum beats in the background. Download this.

One of my favorite pieces of music of all time. Erik Kowalski's sounds are less like music and more like ethereal forces that warm the room in which they are played. I would listen to this album each night as I fell asleep for many months. I like all of CVJ's work, but there is something unique about his first release.

A student of computer science at the University of Iceland Yagya spends his free time creating music on his computer. He seeks influence in the works of Gas, Philip Glass, Basic Channel, Brian Eno and anything that is true to itself and it's ideas. Gas is a project of Cologne, Germany-based electronic musician Wolfgang Voigt. Voigt cites his youthful LSD experiences in the Königsforst, a part of Germany's black forest situated near his hometown of Köln, as the inspiration behind the project. He has claimed that the intention of the project is to "bring the forest to the disco, or vice-versa".

Gas is the most abstract of Voigt's many projects, with each album consisting of several long tracks of dense, hypnotic, atmospheric sound. All Gas material shares a characteristic sound, consisting of an ambient wash of drones and loops, usually accompanied by a repetitive four to the floor kickdrum underneath the multiple layers of music. Occasionally a song will just drift on its own ambience. Voigt has commented that he builds his tracks using samples, which are manipulated beyond recognition to create what can better be described as textural environments than songs; Voigt described the technique to Rob Young of The Wire as "a certain kind of loops and reverse, and alternated reverses, which has no ending and no start, and it's just totally confusing", as well as describing the sound as "moving around in constantly overlapping loop structures, there is no definite start nor end" in an interview with the online music journal Globecat.
